Video Poker Tutorial
Video Poker has become one of the most well-liked casino games in the world, popular among casual and experienced gamblers alike. Casual players love video poker for the simplicity of the game, the fact that it can be played inexpensively, and the huge payoffs possible if they make a big hand. More experienced gamblers play video poker because it’s one of the few casino games where the casino can actually have an advantage over the casino in the right situations. No matter what kind of player you consider yourself, it’s well worth your time to learn how to play video poker. What is Video Poker? Video Poker is a game based on regular poker, played on machines that usually look a lot like slots.
However, video poker games shouldn’t be confused with slot machines; they should be treated as two different kinds of casino games. All video poker games work in pretty much the same way. The player has the option of playing for anywhere between one and five coins. After starting the game, the player receives five cards, dealt from a regular 52-card deck. Unlike in slot machines, where the probabilities of certain outcomes can be weighted, video poker machines have the same chance of dealing out any card at any time. After the player gets the initial five-card hand, they may choose to discard any cards they don’t want. These cards are replaced by new cards to make a final five card hand. The player gets paid based on the strength of their hand, with stronger hands winning more money than weaker ones. How strong a hand you’re going to need to win at video poker depends on the game being played. There are dozens, maybe hundreds of different video poker games, each of which has different payouts for various hands. For instance, in Jacks or Better Video Poker – perhaps the most popular form of the game – you’ll need (as the name suggests) a pair of jacks or higher to win. In Deuces Wild Video Poker, a game in which all twos are considered wild cards that can count as anything you need them to be, the player needs at least a three of a kind to win.
Video Poker Strategy Not surprisingly, each of these different video poker games requires a different strategy. Some video poker strategies can be very complex, requiring the player to memorize or print out long charts in order to play perfectly. And if you’re a serious video poker player, you’ll want to play perfect, optimal video poker strategy. Video poker is one of the only casino games in which the player can sometimes hold an advantage over the casino. For instance, in Deuces Wild Video Poker, some machines actually have a return of nearly 100. 8%.
In other words, the player has a. 8% edge over the house! Other games that offer returns of slightly over 100% include Double Bonus Video Poker (100. 2%), and Double Double Bonus Video Poker (100. 1%). However, there are several things you must do to get this advantage, many of which occur before you even start playing. First of all, the returns listed above only apply when you’re playing what’s known as a full pay video poker machine. For instance, while there are many Deuces Wild video poker games out there, most all not the full pay version. If you want to play Deuces Wild with an advantage, you’ll need to find the following pay table: Natural Royal Flush (no wilds): 800 Four Deuces: 200 Wild Royal Flush: 25 Five of a Kind: 15 Straight Flush: 9 Four of a Kind: 5 Full House: 3 Flush: 2 Straight: 2 Three of a Kind: 1 Keep in mind that all of these numbers are per coin, and are given on a «for one» basis; you do not get your original coins back even if you win a hand. One important thing to remember while playing video poker is that you should almost always play the maximum number of coins allowed; usually, the royal flush payout is much lower (per coin) when you play with fewer coins. Other pay tables may be better bets that many other casino games, but probably won’t give you any advantage, either. For instance, many Deuces Wild video poker games offer only 4 coins for a four of a kind while giving an extra coin on some other hands. However, since four of a kind is a relatively common hand in Deuces Wild, the overall effect on the player’s return is negative. Keep in mind that even a machine that pays very close to a 100% return – such as many that pay over 99%, like full pay Jacks or Better – may be profitable when combined with casino rewards or promotions. Jacks or Better Video Poker Strategy Once you’re sitting at your video poker machine, you’ll need to play optimal strategy (or close to it) in order to take advantage of the excellent payouts offered. Video poker strategy can be very complex, but for some games, simpler strategies can give you virtually the same return. For instance, the following strategy for Jacks or Better (developed by Michael Shackleford) offers a return of 99. 46% on a full pay machine, as opposed to 99. 54% with perfect strategy. Using this strategy, you should keep the best hand possible using the five cards you’re given, according to the rankings on the following chart: 1. Four of a kind, royal flush, straight flush, full house, or three of a kind. 2. Four to a royal flush. 3. Straight or flush. 4. Four to a straight flush. 5. Two pair or high pair (jacks or higher). 6. Three to a royal flush. 7. Four to a flush. 8. Low pair. 9. Four to an open-ended straight. 10. Two high cards of the same suit. 11. Three to a straight flush. 12. Two high cards (unsuited). 13. A ten and face card (jack, queen or king) of the same suit. 14. One high card. 15. Discard all five cards.
